EDINBURG, Texas (Friday, September 8, 2023) – Rio Grande Valley FC (7-10-11) is set to dual with Eastern conference side Hartford Athletic (4-19-4) this Saturday, September 9 at Trinity Health Stadium; this marks the first trip for RGV FC to Connecticut on official business.
The home side, Hartford Athletic, look to bounce back into rhythm after going four straight weeks without earning a single point. Their last set of points came on August 5,2023 as they upset New Mexico United at Trinity Health Stadium, 2-1.
Since then, Hartford have remained the lowest ranked team in the East and they will be looking to derail the Toros this weekend, who have managed to keep postseason probabilities alive despite ranking 11th in the West. Rio Grande must, without a doubt, earn at minimum three points in every remaining match to stay alive and accumulate enough credit to battle for a final playoff spot to avoid missing out on the party come late October.
RGV FC suffered a tough to swallow loss at the hands of a hot Phoenix Rising FC side, who benefitted from an equally hot striker, Danny Trejo, after he opened the score sheet with a long-distance screamer, the match ultimately ended in a 2-0 result for the Arizona side and dropped Rio Grande to well below a 10% playoff probability in that instance.
Now, this Saturday proves to be a make-or-break match; a freshly reinforced front line might see some shifts in formation and a surprise skilled player in the mix after a shifty forward was acquired on loan from Chicago Fire FC. Alex Monis looked sharp in training all week and he could see some minutes this weekend as Toros Sporting Director, Wilmer Cabrera, looks to throw it all in the mix in crunch time.
