SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Tuesday, August 15, 2023) – Rio Grande Valley FC (6-7-10) and rival side
San Antonio FC (12-4-7) are set to face off for the first time this 2023 season. Toyota Field will host the always action-packed derby, bringing a much-desired showdown to ESPN2 for viewers at home.
The visiting side, Rio Grande Valley FC, are coming off a convincingly well performed 2-2 draw at defending Eastern conference champion side Louisville City FC. The Toros kept themselves in the fight every step of the way, benefitting from a pair of set piece goals as Juan Cabezas and Juan Galindrez claimed one apiece.
The Colombian duo celebrated their achievements on the night passionately as they knew the implications of the match and how important rescuing a point on the road was to the team positioning in the Western conference standings as the race tightens between the 6th and 10th spot overall. Having lifted their spirits prior to the quick turnaround back home to Edinburg, the Toros regained focus and worked on sharpening their game in all aspects to avoid falling into tough traps against a very offensive minded side, as is San Antonio FC.
RGV FC Sporting Director, Wilmer Cabrera, emphasized the importance of playing at pace with the opponent while respecting their speed and scoring ability, as SAFC currently sit in the top rankings in terms of goal scoring and offensive production. Rio Grande Valley is no stranger to scoring as of late either and their distribution of the ball has significantly improved after an uncharacteristic slip up at Las Vegas.
It is no secret that every match matters from here on out and the entire roster is aware of what’s on the line in these coming games to close out the season, especially a derby match against the defending league champions. Last year left a bad taste in the mouths of many after a comeback effort was successfully achieved by San Antonio at Toyota Field, managing a 2-2 result in extra time to ruin the road party for RGV FC who had them on the ropes all night; this match should be a true test for both sides and there will be plenty to talk about.
