Edinburg, Texas, April 30 – The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros (2-2-1) fell in their season home opener against LA Galaxy II (3-0-4). Jack McBean and Ari Lassiter would score the goals for Los Angeles.
For the beginning of the first half both of the team were testing each other and struggled to find any opportunities at goal. The first real chance at goal was at the 20th minute. RGV FC Toros’ goalkeeper, Tyler Deric, had a great save to keep the score line even. Jose Escalante would have a few opportunities to get the Toros ahead. In the 26th minute Escalante weaved through the defensive but the ball was sent for a corner. In the 35th he controlled the ball on the box but LA Galaxy II’s Denzel Slager was able to clear the ball.
It would not take Los Angeles much time in the second half to pull ahead. In the 47th minute, Jack McBean would find the net after connecting with a cross from a set piece. Just four minutes later, Ari Lassiter found the net as well to double LA Galaxy II’s lead. Kevin Garcia had a powerful header in the 61st minute but the ball sailed over the crossbar.
The RGV FC Toros will return on the road to face in state rival San Antonio FC on Saturday, May 7. The Toros return home on May 13 to host Real Monarchs SLC.
The Dynamo and RGV FC formed a hybrid affiliation in July. As part of the partnership, the Dynamo control all technical aspects of the club, including the selection and formation of the coaching staff as well as the construction of the roster. RGV FC, which operates the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the NBA D-League affiliate of the Houston Rockets, will manage business operations for the club, including the current construction of a 9,400-seat state-of-the-art soccer stadium in Edinburg, Texas, 330 miles southwest of Houston, across the Mexican border from Reynosa.
